Adding Features to Browning Elite HP5 Firmware
The Browning Elite HP5 series trail cameras have a rich set of features. But, like all computer firmware, it’s not perfect. Based on some Facebook feedback, and our own experience, I identified several small additions of interest to the camera trapping community. Unfortunately, Browning isn’t really setup to support small modifications to their firmware. In this post, I briefly describe a set of tools I used to add several small, but useful features to the Elite HP5 series Browning cameras. I also provide a links to firmware images with these enhancements that you can try yourself.
Note that I am not associated with Browning, nor their licensee the Prometheus Group, that make and market Browning trail cameras and firmware. Loading non-Browning firmware onto your camera may void the warranty. I have done my best to verify the firmware described in this post works, but cannot provide any guarantees. I will do my best to support through comments, below.
Custom firmware images with these features can be found on my GitHub Site. The GitHub site also includes factory firmware images, and instructions for re-installing factory firmware if the camera requires warranty service.
Feature Enhancements
Here are a few features I’ve added to the baseline factory firmware. See video below:
Night-time Video Limit and SmartIR Mode
For the last several generations of Spec Ops and Recon Force cameras(at least), the Browning factory firmware limits the duration of night-time video to 20 seconds, even if the “video length” is set to something larger. In addition, the “SmartIR” mode, which allows the camera to keep taking video as long as PIR sensor is still active, is only active for daytime videos.
As far as I can tell, these are merely to “conserve batteries” and not to prevent the LEDs from overheating. It’s possible that this firmware feature has become obsolete with the changes in LED technology used in these cameras. In any case, I have a “Deep Tech” post on this topic for those interested. In this enhancement, I bypass the 20 second night-time video limit. The camera will take video, even at night, according the duration set in the menu. In addition, the “SmartIR” mode now applies to night-time videos as well.
Custom Info Strip
The info strip featured at the bottom of photos and videos has the date and time, the temperature, the phase of the moon, an oversized Browning logo, and, in the Spec Ops model, the atmospheric pressure and trend. For this enhancement, I added a few other items, including:
- A downsized version of the Browning logo that doesn’t extend up into the photo/video space.
- A “seconds” field to the time of day;
- The projected remaining battery capacity: Note that in this release, I’m using the factory battery meter for this function. Unfortunately, this meter is not accurate for LiFeS2 (e.g. Energizer Ultimate Lithium) batteries. More on why this is, and a possible fix in future posts.
Volume, Folder, and File Naming based on Camera Name
Normally, when an SD cards formatted in these camera, the volume name is changed to “BROWNING”. New photos and videos are stored in folders in \DCIM called xxx_BTCF, in files called IMG_xxxx.{JPG,MP4}. With the firmware enhancements, these labels are all taken from the camera name, as set by the user. Note that only the first 5 and 4 characters are used for the folder and file suffix/prefix respectively. Thus, for camera name, “MYCAMERA”, the SD card will be labeled “MYCAMERA” and files can be found in DCIM/100MYCAM/MYCA0001.JPG. Any “space” in the first 5 characters of the camera name is replaced by an “underscore”.
Screen shot below shows what this looks like in Windows for a camera named “Z9WBWL”.
Custom Ribbon in Playback Menu
The factory firmware allows you to review photos and videos in the field by showing them on the camera’s LCD screen. Often, we want to know the date and time the photos/videos were taken. This information is in the “info strip” at the bottom of the video, but the font is so small, and the resolution of the screen so limited, (and our eyes so old) that it is impossible to read. In this enhancement, I have added the date and time, in larger font, to the bottom of the playback screen.
Firmware Availability
I have posted a set of custom firmware images to my GitHub Site, here, along with instructions for loading. Note that there are different images for the Recon Force (BTC-7E-HP5) and Spec Ops (BTC-8E-HP5) variants. Choose the one appropriate for your camera. Images will only work on the correct Browning Elite HP5 model. Other Browning models, and cameras from other vendors will not work (and should not recognize these firmware images). I have also included a synthesized copy of the factory firmware, which can be loaded back into the camera if you decide these features aren’t for you.
Tools
I originally developed a set of reverse engineering and firmware hacking tools for the Recon Force Advantage, which I used to convert it to white flash. See: IR to White Flash Trail Camera Conversion. Recently, I have updated these tools for the HP5 models. Here’s quick summary of the function of key pieces:
- Pack and unpack the firmware file format required by the camera.
- Identify and dissect key functions in the existing firmware binary, as well as their locations
- “Patch in” substitute function calls that allow existing functions (e.g. displaying the info strip) to call different, or new functions (e.g. battery capacity)
- “Patch in” new code, written in c and compiled and linked using the GCC tool set.
In principle, these tools can be used to introduce arbitrary new functions to the camera. In practice, adding new functions which are slight variations on existing ones is much easier. The current version of my tools also limit the total size of new functions and any required data structures to about 6 KBytes. There is obviously a lot more detail here. Let me know if you are interested in learning more in comments below.

I don’t yet understand the “degree of difficulty” for these, so no promises. Are there others you would like to see?

Just recently found your firmware and installed it on my 2 HP5’s and 1 HP4. Absolutely brilliant. I get a flash on every video when starting night time recording even with your updated firmware (was also on the original SW) Do you think you will have an update for this later ? Also where is the best place to find any updated firmware you have developed ?

Thanks, Brian! On the improperly exposed first frame, I agree this is annoying. I believe it has something to do with the interaction between the autoexposure algorithm for the sensor, and the dynamic LED lighting. To save power, the camera tries to use only the flash necessary to get a well exposed image. Unfortunately, it gets the exposure data from a frame taken by the image sensor itself. I might be possible to “fix” this by delaying the start of recording until after the calibration frame. This would come at the cost of additional 30 ms more trigger delay. Feel free to add this as an “issue” at my GitHub site, but, honestly, I probably won’t get to it for a while (best case). This part of the code involves an undocumented interface between the firmware and the video processing pipeline, one that I haven’t spent the necessary time to understand.
I am working on another update. It is based on a more recent release of the factory firmware for the HP5s and features a way to store (and restore) a custom camera configuration from the SD card. This to benefit users who have to setup lots of cameras with their own settings, and wanting to avoid errors due to clicking through the menus for each camera.

Thank you! I’m only downloading and installing now, so no experience yet, but it’s terrific to see someone helping to improve on a manufacturer’s ‘we know best’ attitude.
I’d love the option of a 24 hour clock, but I’m already very pleased with the removal of the 20s. limit on IR videos and the reduction of the size of the logo. Some of the other features don’t interest me particularly, but I expect it would be a pain to allow ‘mixing and matching’ of installed enhancements.
Your welcome! I’ll keep 24 hour clock on the list. You are right that providing an image for each combination of features is daunting. A better solution would be to add to the menu system to allow “run-time” selection of features. The menu system code is fairly complex (I suspect built by some internal tool used in the software development toolkit), but I have been making some progress with that lately. We’ll see how far I get.

Another feature request – though I’ll say at once that I realise the problem – is the option of changing the date format from the U.S.-style MM/DD/YYYY to the more universal DD/MM/YYYY (or even YYYYMMDD).
You’re not going to force that onto Browning’s main home market in the U.S.! But if you manage to offer ‘run-time’ options, that would be a good one to have.

That’s definitely the way to do it! I’m sort of surprised that Browning didn’t include this update when they added multi-language support to the menu.
Many of these issues have been big pet peeves for a long time. I’m thrilled you have both the skill and motivation to address them!
I’ve always wanted to see time and date stamps while in the field. Thing is, I almost never use time and date stamps because I never want to give up any image-real-estate. (But when I do, the info is still too small to read in the field, anyway – just like you said.)
Here are a couple questions for you:
— Would there be (could there be) a way to access time-stamp info as part of the in-the-field review process even if one does *not* record with the info-strip turned on? Perhaps formatting the up or down key to function as an additional time-stamp reveal? I hope that question made sense. It would probably be too much trouble to try to code, but I have always been curious about whether that would be possible. Typically, the only cams for which I have the info-strip turned on are along our driveway, and in areas frequented by ginseng poachers. Otherwise, I’ve gotten out of the habit for the rest of my kazillion cameras.
— Do you have any buggy HP5s on hand? Like ones that simply cannot retain date programming? If so, have you tried your new firmware on any of your buggy HP5s? I’m curious if your firmware update might fix that common issue — the inability to retain programming.
fwiw, I have one really “special” HP4 that refuses to retain date and info-strip programming. I thought you’d appreciate just how very special this particular camera is. First, whenever I review the footage from that camera, the info-strip appears on the final video, even though I’ve specifically programmed for it to be turned off. That’s pretty typical. Here’s where the fun part comes in: the label shows recording dates to be January 1, 1970. That’s like 5 decades before Browning Trail Cameras was even founded. (I’m assuming all of the original dates cameras revert back to are from when the camera was manufactured?) Anyway, here’s the super duper fun part about that particular camera: even though the date stamp on the video image reads 1970 — the actual file information, as listed in the file directory on my desktop computer — provides a recording date of……drumroll please…..December 31, 2097.

Have you ever tried fixing that awful (albeit very brief) freeze-frame/lost-frame issue that occurs at the beginning of all Browning cam videos? Do you know what I’m referring to? I find that freeze/loss particularly frustrating because it happens precisely when the camera has just begun recording, which is also precisely when the animal is most likely in the frame. Since wild animals are often only in the frame for a few seconds, those first seconds can be crucial.
Really excited about your work-in-progress, in addition to what you’ve already addressed. I haven’t tried the new firmware yet, but definitely plan to.

Thanks Amy. Answers to questions below in order:
1. Date Time During Playback: the feature that I added does what you want, I think. It displays the date and time at the bottom of screen in large font from the file meta data. The video itself (including the infostrip, or not) is unmodified. I.e. I *don’t* enlarge the font of the infostrip.
2. Buggy HP5s and forgetful HP4: I don’t have any buggy HP5s on hand. Relating to your HP4 that doesn’t retain date and infostrip setting. Are other settings lost, as well? In any case, it’s possible that re-installing firmware (including the original factory firmware) will solve this problem. The firmware stores these settings in a file on an internal memory chip. When this breaks, settings can get lost. I’ve seen cases where erasing the memory chip and reprogramming it — which is what happens when you install firmware — will fix the problem.
3. Bad frame at start of video. I’m not sure I’ve seen this. I will contact you offline for an example.

Hi Bob! I am interested in using 60 Browning Spec Op Edge cameras in time-lapse mode for some desert tortoise research. The cameras seem great, but I would like for the timestamp to include seconds. Do you recommend modifying the firmware for the Spec Op Edge or trying a different camera for this application. Many thanks in advance! Tom
Desert tortoises sound interesting! As far as cameras, I guess it depends. Have you already committed to the Edges? All things being equal, I would go with the newer, Elite HP5 models. I’m not sure if it’s related to supply issues during pandemic, but we’ve had some issues with the Edges (e.g. early failure of the lenses, leading to out of focus images). If you can use one of the HP5 models, instead, the firmware images on my GitHub site will put the timestamp, down the second, in the info strip, for photos taken in time lapse mode.
On the other hand, if you have 60 Edges ready to go, then “all” you need is a version of these firmware hacks for the Edge. I am currently working with NatureSpy.org to get the couple of Edges I need to do firmware porting. I’m not sure when/if this will come through. If you have a couple of your Edges to spare to move things along, let me know. There’s a good chance I could get them (or more likely substitutes) back to you in workable order, with the new firmware, in a couple of weeks.

We are looking to get 60 Edge cameras if you think they might be good units (at least with company warranty) as they are on deep discount right now, $80 per unit. I have a little problem for which I wanted to ask you if you had a solution: I tested the software by leaving one of my hp5 on the field for a week and everything worked fine. The only problem I encountered is that when I walked in front of my device (which I hadn’t touched for 1 week) a red LED lit up ! You can see it here : https://ibb.co/ctL42z9
I checked then and the detection test was disabled in the menu, si it can’t be it. My device had never done this before. Do you know where it can come from ?

I suspect that you accidentally downloaded the BA_DSLR firmware, and not the (plain) BA firmware. To check, go to the “Update Firmware Menu” on your camera. At the bottom you should see: “WWL8EH5_ba”. If you see “WWL8EH5_ba_dslr” you have the wrong image. To get the “BA” image, go back to the github site ( https://github.com/robertzak133/BTC-7-8E-HP5-Firmware-Images ) and select the link in the table labeled “BA” in the “BTC-8E-HP5” column. Download and install this and you should be good to go.
(from your photo, it looks like this an 8E-HP5 (SpecOps) model. If it’s the 7E-HP5 (Recon Force) choose the BTC-7E-HP5 BA image)

I know that having multiple images is confusing, and a source of errors (not least of which my own errors in posting them). I have recently made much progress on the menu system for these cameras, and plan to release a unified firmware image where extra features are enabled (or not) through extensions to the menu. Phew. Glad that worked. Per earlier comment, I just tested an updated version of this firmware which includes old and new features (including the DSLR trigger mode) in a single image. There are options to enable new features via new menu items. I expect to update the GitHub site with this new release early next week. Now that I have figured out how to add items to the menu system, I’m going to maintain a *single image* to avoid the “wrong firmware” problem you had (and to reduce maintenance work)

I haven’t had a Browning before, so I don’t know whether this is typical or whether I have a ‘difficult’ one, but it seems to be very fussy about the batteries. I started by using 8 (fully-charged!) Panasonic eneloop pros and the camera seems to give up taking videos after a couple of nights. While waiting for delivery of more Energizer Ultimate lithium batteries I’ve currently got four eneloops and four Energizers in it and the camera is still struggling. Note that the camera isn’t ‘dead’ – the menu screen appears and I can play with the settings. I mention this because you refer to the unreliability of its battery meter and I wonder whether the camera ‘thinks’ and ‘decides’ that the batteries are run down when they aren’t.
Is there a recommended battery type for the Browning 7E-HP5? Preferably rechargeable?

What option do you have the “battery type” set to? For Eneloop batteries (or a mix of Eneloop and other batteries, on a temporary basis), you should set the battery type to “NiMH” (Nickel Metal Hydride), which is the rechargeable chemistry used by Panasonic for their Eneloop products. NiMH AA cells operate a a lower voltage than standard AA batteries (nominally 1.2 Volts/cell vs. 1.5 Volts/cell). Browning trail cameras have a feature in the firmware which powers down the camera if the battery voltage falls below some threshold. I believe this is to prevent the camera from corrupting things due to a marginal power supply. The firmware determines this threshold depending on the battery type setting. The battery-type setting also calibrates the battery meter (for a similar reason).
[with my luck, you’ll say that you already have the camera set for “NiMH” batteries, in which case I’m going to have to think more creatively 🙂 ]

Thank you for the background; it’s very helpful to know that the camera does indeed react to battery voltage. If mine is over-sensitive, I may have to stick with Energizers rather than lower-voltage rechargeable Eneloops. Experimentation continues …
I’m betting that setting the battery type to NiMH will fix your problem. BTW — I expect the battery meter to perform well on battery types *other than* Lithium. I’d be interested to know if you find this to be the case. Monitoring the state of charge of LiFeS2 chemistry is more challenging than other chemistries. Working on a post on that now 🙂

Sorry for the delay in reporting back. Yes, setting the battery type to NiMH had the desired effect and the camera seemed to work properly. (I say ‘seemed to’ because it doesn’t seem to be as sensitive as the other camera I have in the garden, a Spypoint Force-Dark, and is triggered less often than the Spypoint. On the other hand, the video quality of the Browning is much superior to the Spypoint’s and the Spypoint’s lens has a tendency to mist over). Then the Energizers I had ordered arrived, so I put them in the Browning instead and set the battery type to Lithium. As you expected, the battery meter is a bit crazy; during a single 30-second video it showed 100, then 75, then 50 then 25.
At the same time as I was changing the batteries I saw that you had updated the software with the new menu options 🙂 . Further thanks and comment now on that thread …
Glad setting the battery type to NiMH worked! EUL measurement is tricky. EULs lose voltage rapidly when under load, but recover voltage while unloaded. I have found to get an “accurate” (+/- 20%) estimate of state of charge, you need to leave the batteries unloaded for 24 hours, then measure the open circuit voltage, then to push measurements through a mapping table. Applying the “unloaded” lookup table to a loaded set of batteries (what the camera’s battery meter does when camera is taking photos, videos, or in playback mode yields practically no information. With the factory meter for Lithium batteries, the reading on the first frame of a video after the camera has not triggered in last 24 hours gives most accurate reading. More in an upcoming post.
I notice that the HP5’s use a different Fresnel lens, and different PIR detector vs. the Advantage. Our experience agrees with yours — the HP5’s don’t seem quite as sensitive as the Advantages 🙁

I just downloaded and installed the firmware for the BTC 7E HP5. All went smoothly, but below the “Delete All”
I have two “IR Flash Power” bars. The first has Economy/Long Range/Blur reduction. The second IR Flash Power has Smart IR on/off. Is this correct?
That sounds like a bug :(. I’m away from the lab for a few days, but will take a look at this as soon as I can. Are the other features working for you?
They are! What an improvement!
I especially like being able to record more than 20 seconds at night. There is a Great Horned owl that visits a transient pond on my ranch every night around the same time. I would have him landing beside the pond, and every time he would stay stationary for at least 20 seconds looking around before he decides to move and drink. Although I had my HP5 on a delay of 1 sec I still missed him drinking and flying away.
The smaller data strip is a big plus too. As it is now with my Browning firmware. I have to crop a good portion of the strip when I edit my videos.
As for things I’d love to see with this and any of the Browning cameras is some way to accurately frame the scene when I am setting up in the field. Right now I have to approximate the framing then let the camera record a video view on the SD card. Then take out the card, put it in my iPhone chip reader wait for it to download then check it out on the phones screen. An inelegant solution if there ever was one! Trying to accurately compose on a two inch video screen is almost impossible.
Anyway I am thrilled with your software and excited to put it into use.

I’m currently thinking of a new project that could help with the framing problem. We currently bring along a “calibrated” (to Janet’s eye) point and shoot digital camera. When we get the security box in about the right spot, Janet puts the point and shoot up against the box and snaps a picture. Then she can look at the screen of the point and shoot to assess the “aim” of the security box, and by extension the trail camera when it goes in. Not perfect, but a lot easier than swapping sd cards. A WiFi connection on the trail camera that could display the current frame on an iPhone would be better. Unfortunately, this is not a firmware fix. Stay tuned.

Re: Date Format — Not with standard Browning firmware. But yes with my hacked firmware for recent ReconForce and SpecOps models. I’ve added a new menu item “Date Format” where DD/MM/YYYY is an option. Note that this format only applies to the info strip (the set date/time menu still uses the MM/DD/YYYY format). Re: Temperature Gauge — sorry, no. The internal thermometer is mounted on the circuit card of the camera. Unfortunately, the heat from the microprocessor raises the local temperature above the ambient temperature. This is especially true after continuous operation. The temperature gauge is most accurate in a photo or video that is taken after camera has been asleep for a good long while.
Hi Bob, I see from reading this particular blog that you were considering or have actually implemented a White Balance fix to improve image quality. On the few HP5s I have, it’s not the white balance (color temp) that is a problem for me, but that the HP5 overexposes the video. While the overall image is brighter than what I get with the HP4, of which I’m very happy with, highlights on the HP5 are blown and unrecoverable during editing. My cameras are in the desert at my house and there is virtually no shade and during multiple hours of the day the ground is much too bright and that is where the highlights get blown out.
I’ve not implemented any image correction hacks. At least partly because I have no sense of color with which to test results — not so much color-blind as “color clueless” 🙂
But I did notice in some of the HP5s we picked up recently from a year in the desert in Nevada that on bright days, the auto-exposure algorithm does tend to wash out the brightest areas of the image.
I’ll add this to my list, but I’m not sure when/if I’ll get to it. I really am trying to free up time for other projects. But I’ll definitely keep it in mind.
Yes, that’s the fix I hope you can do. I’ve told Browning about the overexposure, but didn’t feel that they would do anything about that. When I’ve had an HP5 sent in for repair, I asked that they replace with it with an HP4. HP5 wide angle is good for some spots and the night video is good, just ruins the experience for me when I see the brighter areas, as you say, washed out.
In the meantime, you might try giving your HP5’s “sunglasses” (a neutral density filter, in photography parlance). I’d experiment with the lenses from a cheap pair of sunglasses. If that works, and the image quality it ok, great. If it fixes the washout, but is grainy, you could look on amazon for the cheapest camera-quality neutral density filters you can find. If the technique works, you may even be able to get a sheet of neutral density filter and punch out circles small enough to fit on the inside of the camera case (to avoid annoying external pieces). If you try any of this, let us know if it works!
I currently have loaded your firmware on an HP4. I like the feature to increase nighttime video. On all my cameras I set video length to 1 minute with 1 second delay. So on the HP4 it’s now set to 1 minute recording for nighttime as well.
After some thought, I think it would be nice if the new feature had the ability to set the nighttime recording length separately from the daytime. Depending upon the camera location, I wouldn’t necessarily want 1 minute nighttime recording as that could drain batteries faster depending upon activity.
I can see where that would be a useful feature! I would want to preserve the current behavior as a default — that is, when current “Video Length” is set, it applies to both day and night videos. A new menu — “Night Video Length” could then over-ride the the setting for video taken at night. This shouldn’t be to hard. I just finished another feature, now in Beta. When I get back to firmware hacking, I’ll see about adding this. Thanks for the suggestion!
It would be nice if the timelapse features could work at night. We do research on plant grow in the field and need pictures every 30 minutes for several days both during the day and night but unfortunately the browning cameras do not keep doing the timelapse at night. I suspect this is to save battery. ?
I looked at this a while ago and gave up :/ But I recently completed another feature related to Timelapse code, so I understand it a bit better, now. Suppose it worked like this: When saving timeplapse photos in “TLS” mode (generating .TLS files), photos would be taken all day a night; but color images, no flash at night (you could use your own light source). If saving photos as .JPG files (new feature), photos all day and night, using flash at night for B&W images? This isn’t very clean, from a UI perspective, but it would be much easier to implement. Let me know.
Thanks. I believe the cameras do keep taking pics at night in timelapse mode. At least mine btc7a does. The issue is it does not trigger the flash hence all pics are black. I have been researching lights since adding a light will solve the issue but for my application it is kind of difficult. My cameras are installed deep in the eveglades several hours on foot thru the swamp and they need to keep taking pics every 15 minutes for at least a week, can’t go every day to change batteries for the lights. Very difficult to get q light that last that long on all night, also the light might attract critters, I am teying to photograph a flower. Matching a light on a timer with the exact moment the camera fires would be ideal but I have no idea how to do that. Another idea I have is adding some devise in front of the pir sensor that moves every 15 minutes triggering the movement picture taking ability of the camera that does work at night but I have not found something suitable, I which I was technically savvy to build something like that using ardurino. Do you know of any trail camera that allows night timelapse or some contraption that I can add in front of the pir sensor with a timer so it creates movement every 15 minutes at night?
Ahh, I see. I hear you about not wanting to trek through the everglades to change batteries. The external PIR trigger would be an interesting approach.
As luck would have it, I’m trying to develop just such a “PIR trigger” device for a different project (installing a remote break-beam or PIR sensor). I’m trying to avoid any kind of mechanical trigger, as those are hard to make reliable (especially in environments like the everglades). Instead, my ideas is to “flash” a heat source on and off electrically, and place this “switched” heat source directly in front of the camera’s PIR sensor. My first thought was to use readily available small incandescent light bulbs as the heat source. Unfortunately, it turns out that the glass used to enclose these lights filters out IR light longer than 2 um in wavelength. The PIR sensor has a filter which excludes any IR light *shorter* than 5 um. The long and short of it is, incandescent lights don’t work 🙁
My current idea is to use a pair of resistors as heat sources. When a current passes through them, all resistors heat up. The trick (for this application) is to get them to heat up and cool quickly (~100 ms). This involves finding parts with low thermal mass. I did some back of the envelope thermal modeling that’s promising. I currently have some parts on order to test this idea out. I’m planning on using a low power microcontroller for the break beam sensor controller. It would not be difficult to create a version of this which just triggers periodically.
But for your application, it would certainly be easier to setup and deploy if I just tweaked my updated timelapse code.
I will keep you apprised of both efforts.

We use a lot of Browning cameras, mostly BTC-8E-HP5 these days, and one of the main sources of failure is the screen. This is a pity because usually, the rest of the unit works fine. So we can keep using them, but changing anything is a pain.
Anyway, I don’t think that is fixable (although I could be wrong?). But this got me thinking. What would be amazing is the ability to program the camera without using the interface. For example, through a simple txt file on an SD card. It would make deploying a high number of cameras (which is quite common for scientific studies) so much easier and, more importantly, safer. It would reduce the risk of mistakes, all the while saving units with a dead screen.
Seeing what you are able to do, do you think adding this option is feasible? I’ve contacted Browning directly before, but they don’t seem too interested in this idea.

What a great idea! As it happens, the camera already has an internal file, called “Cold.bin”, which stores all the user-set parameters. Users never see this file because it is stored on an internal, visible-only-to-the-firmware “NVM-disk”.
How about this: If the SD card has a file called “Cold.bin” on it, we load the parameters from there. I’ll create a new menu item (maybe an extension so the “Default Settings” menu called “Custom Default”) which writes the current settings to the SD Card. Once this file is created for a given camera type, you can copy it off the SD card and onto any new SD cards you want to deploy.
Would this meet your needs? (I note that the Date/Time is not stored in the Cold.bin file, so if it gets out of whack, you’d still need the LCD 🙁 )
I will add this to my requested feature list. It will likely be another month or two before I’m back hacking Browning firmware, but when I do get back, i’ll take a look at this. I will keep you posted.

Your approach seems great! I am amazed that you were able to come up with that solution so fast! Adding to it, would it be possible to have only a single SD card with the “Cold.bin” file and use it to program multiple cameras? So that, as you said initially, we load the file if it exists from the SD card (and we keep settings as they were otherwise), and then we can switch the SD with an empty one and use the first one to program another unit. That being said, if it isn’t possible, or if I’m asking too much, no big deal. It’s just that the way you started writing it hinted that it might be possible =)
Regarding the Date/Time, we’ve had issue with the it resetting and we can deal with it afterward. Usually, when that happens, it also means that the camera settings have fully reset, which was our main concern (having no screen and sometimes failling buttons). But if we can deal with that part with your solution, then we will only have to deal with the time afterward.
With some unit it might be tricky to get to the “Custom Default” without the screen, but that’s nothing compared to blindly setting everything up ^^. And we would only have to do it once !

I can make it so that a camera with new firmware(!) will download a cold.bin file from any SD card. Thus, you could use one camera to create the reference configuration, then remove that SD card and use it as a “configuration” reference for other cameras (of the same type). I’ll make it so that you can store the config files for different camera types on the same device.
But, of, course, all this requires that the target device have new firmware. This will involve loading the firmware onto a camera with no LCD? I guess if you’ve figured out how to set the time correctly without visual feedback, you can also load new firmware 🙂 Also, my current firmware hacks only work with Edge, Elite-HP4, and Elite-HP5 cameras (BTC-7E, BTC-8E, BTC-7E-HP4, BTC-8E-HP4, BTC-7E-HP5, BTC-8E-HP4).
If you have a lot of these cameras with busted LCDs, we may want to invest some time in looking for a source of replacement parts. I’ve never done this, but there’s a fair chance we can find replacement LCDs somewhere online. The cameras above probably use the same LCD module, but just in case, Which model camera(s) are you looking to fix?
Bob, I wanted to jump in and say thanks for all you’ve done on this. I envy your level of technical understanding to work with these cameras. I have had a BTC-7E-HP5 for less than a year and just found it with dead batteries and a corrupt card. I was able to extract the videos, then searched for info on the problem and found your site. I installed your file yesterday and will put it out in the field today. Thanks again for sharing your work!

Thanks again Bob. I installed your modified firmware file for the HP5 of March th 2. this year in three BTC-8E-HP5. All have worked very well..except for that I need to set date and time every time the NiMH battery is changed. All other settings are unchanged.
After installing this last update June th 7., the time and date still needs to be readjusted. Is there a reason for why this cannot stored?

Hi Bob, I would be very interested in finding a supplier for the displays for the 7E HP4 and HP5 models as I now have 3 failed displays. I have used a spare display from a failed HP5 camera in an HP4, so I know they are interchangeable. I have taken the display out of the brown mounting bezel and the code on the rear of all 3 displays is the same- MY200G40P00-001A YG2019 C 201202. I can email you a picture of the display if you would like. I think this is a 2 inch display?

Excellent! No need to send me a display — I have my own collection. I’ve been meaning do do this, and have just been waiting for a guinea pig — err — collaborator. I think with code above, and physical characteristics, I can find some promising matches online. But I suspect the only way to know for sure is to try them. I only found this one source (using Google and Bing). I think the relevant search term is “T20P96 LCD” (possibly “T20P155 LCD”), the model number on the ribbon connector, and back of the LCD, if you want to keep looking.
I have not verified that this part works. Let us know if you decide to give it a try.

Hi Bob, probably of no real interest but I have an older Spec Ops BTC-8A camera which has on a couple of occasions presented the ‘flat battery and nothing on the SD card’ problem. Once though it had stored a couple of OK videos first but then a damaged one at the end when it then stopped working and then flattened the batteries.

Hmm. I also have an old BTC-8A (Spec Ops Advantage) camera with similar symptoms. At one time, I spent an afternoon trying to figure out what was causing the battery to drain. I ruled out the usual suspects (broken coin battery), water damage, etc. I did seem like the camera was “waking up” periodically for no apparent reason. I gave up when I realized that even this “random wakeup” behavior would not have accounted for the magnitude of the battery drain taking place. Reloading firmware might help, and would hurt. If you want to give that a try, let me know, and I can email you version for the factory firmware.
Hi again Bob. Many thanks for the offer but I still have a firmware update that was supplied by James at NatureSpy (UK) which also added a capture timer to the menu. Not sure if it was ‘official’ or not! He sent it to me when the camera played up after 6 months and it fixed the problem (camera stopped retaining any settings). I’ll try it again in case of ‘bit rot’ or whatever it’s called!
I guess two or three flat batteries in 4 years of continual use isn’t too bad, really.
Incidentally I’ve just bought a new Spec Ops Elite HP5, I’ll run it for a while before seeing if it needs your firmware (grin).

I not sure what I am doing wrong loading the firmware. I have BTC-7E-HP5 and downloaded brnbtc72.BRN. On an empty sd, only no option is highlighted under firmware ugrade.
I do find the overexposed first frames of each video annoying on this camera (the recon force advantage did not do this)but I am only using the standard firmware.

Hi again Bob. Something I’ve noticed on both my older BTC-8A and my new BTC-8E HP5 is that the exposure often gets fooled at dusk and dawn. I think the camera thinks it’s still night so it processes as B & W without the IR filter but there is actually enough daylight to illuminate the scene. The result is an excess of IR and all foliage is bleached white! Is this fixable do you think?

I can half help you. For the BTC-8E-HP5, the firmware at: https://github.com/robertzak133/unified-btc-reverse includes a new menu item called “Day Threshold”. With the “Standard” selection, you get the factory settings for Day/Night switchover; with the “Low Light” selection, the camera will continue to take color (no flash) images in lower light than the factory setting; and with the “No Light” selection, the camera will *always* take color (no flash) images/video.
Unfortunately, I can’t offer these mods for the BTC-{7,8}A because I broke my development camera that I need to test new firmware 🙁
Hi Bob, another question. I had set my camera to Standard but it would only take black images during the night. Is there any other setting I need to pay attention to?
I need a little more info to try to understand what’s going on.
1. This is with my new firmware, right?
2. Which setting was set to “Standard”? “Day threshold”?
3. When you say, “will only take black images during the night”, do you mean that it does trigger at night? If video, is entire video dark, or just the first couple of frames?

I just checked, and the IR flash was not set to off. Hmmm. Same results btw. Black footage for the night.
Well, shoot.
Unfortunately, we’ll need to do some remote debugging.
The first step is to confirm that this behavior is related to my firmware. I’ve run the same scenario on one of my BTC-8E-HP5 cameras here in the lab, and I’m getting both color and (flash lit) black and white images. I’ll email you a firmware file in your camera. This should bring it back to the factory firmware image.
Then test the camera again. To speed things up, you can do the “dark” testing in a dark room just by walking in front of it to trigger. Or, even easier, just put your thumb over the light sensor to the right of the PIR lens, and trigger the camera with the other hand. Either way, you should get black and white images, lit by the flash.
If the camera works with the factory firmware, than somehow my firmware is at fault.
If it doesn’t work, even with the factory firmware, then we need to test the LED. This “no glow” LED is not really visible with the naked eye, but you can capture it with a cell phone camera. As in the attached video – note the flicker of 5 purple LEDs as I trigger the camera. If you don’t see the flash in photo mode, try video mode. The 5 led’s should be visible in the cameras viewfinder for the duration of the video.

Ohhhh. Sorry — I completely missed that you were specifically interested in the timelapse function!
Things make a lot more sense to me now.
Ok — so what you want is 24-hour/day timelapse with flash-illuminated photos at night.
Yes! There is one more mysterious settings. There is a new setting associated called “Timelapse File”.
It defaults to “.TLS”. In this setting, the timelapse photos are aggregated into files with the .TLS suffix ,and night-time timelapse photos have no flash. Which is what you were seeing.
If you set “Timelapse File” to “.JPG” two things while happen. First, the flash will come on for night-time photos; and second the time-lapse images will be stored as a series of JPG images. This will illuminate the night time images. It alsol means that you’ll have to stitch the .jPG files together yourself into a video. There are several tools for doing this. Ideally, I would have set things up to make file type independent of night time flash, but the structure of the factory firmware limited my options.
Reload my firwmware, and change the “Timelapse File” to “.JPG” and you’ll get what you want.
Hi Bob, I just found this wonderful ressource. I am a new owner of a Spec Ops HP5 and love it so far but I would also like to use some of your enhancements. I downloaded the files onto the SD card but when I put it into the camera and go to the FW menu point, I cannot choose YES, only NO, so I cannot update the FW. Are there any extra steps that I need to do? I have flashed FWs on other cams before so I know a bit what is happening but this seems like there is a block?
You should have a file named: “brnbtc82.BRN” — if you don’t, you grabbed the wrong entry from the table? Also, make sure this file is in the “top” of the SD card file system. E.g. at “D:\brnbtc82.BRN” (and not in a subfolder, for example, “D:\DCIM\brnbtc82.BRN”
If these aren’t the problem, let me know.
Thanks for the quick reply. I will try again but I think I did it all the right way. I downloaded the file from here but I wonder if the use of mixed case makes a difference. The Yes in the FW menu would show, I just cannot choose it, it is greyed out.
I’m having the same problem as Brownling, options in “FW UPGRADE” are grayed out. It’s a new HP5 purchased from B&H photo and delivered yesterday. Maybe a newer factory firmware doesn’t like the name or size? My factory firmware is BTC8E5_M06170F.I’m having the SD card corruption problem.
Here are the issues that usually cause this problem:
1. Download the file from the GitHub site as “raw”. The resulting file should be about 4MBytes.
2. Make sure the file is named *exactly* “brnbtc72.BRN” (for ReconForce HP5 BTC-7E-HP5) or “brnbtc82.BRN” (for SpecOps HP5 BTC-8E-HP5). Sometimes browsers will add extra characters to the filename – e.g. “brnbtc82(2).BRN” during download. If this happens, edit the file name to get rid of the extra characters.
3. Make sure the firmware file is in the “top level” of the file system on the SD card. E.g. “D:/brnbtc82.BRN”, and not in a folder on the SD card (e.g. “D:/DCIM/brnbtc82.BRN”)
Let me know if these don’t work.

Bob, I didn’t download the raw file before and that’s probably what caused the problem. The file I originally downloaded (by right clicking / save as) was only 294 KB (brnbtc82.BRN). I’ll try flashing later this afternoon and let you know if I still have a problem. Thanks for the help.
Stumbled across this site when I was trying to find a solution to the file naming convention used by Browning. I used some other vendor fieldcams that either prepended or appended a date/timestamp to the filename so it was easy to import all files into a common folder on my PC and sort by dates. For example:
–> Current format: IMG_0003.MP4
–> Example Preferred format: IMG_0003_24NOV7.mp4 or IMG_0003_110724.mp4
I archive my captures so maybe it’s a corner case request. Or maybe it’s already possible to do and I haven’t figured it out.
Glad you found us. An interesting suggestion – I often like to tag filenames with creation date as well. Unfortunately, the Browning firmware uses a legacy file system mode which limits filenames to 8 characters, and file extensions to 3 characters.
But there are alternatives. For example, as you are importing them, you can use the OS file manage to sort by creation date, and bin them like that.
It’s also possible to use a tool like Windows PowerShell to write a script which would rename (for example) all the files in a folder by post-pending the date. Googling “windows powershell adding date to filenames for files in a directory” yields the following promising result:
